Barcelona legend and Intermiami midfielder Sergio Basket have revealed that they will cut their boots at the end of the current campaign. Following Intermiami’s qualifying round for the Major League Soccer playoffs, the Spanish maestro is preparing for the final match of his illustrious play day.
Busquets draws curtains on a glittering career that includes the glory of the World Cup and European Championships, nine La Liga Crowns, three Champions League victories and seven Copa Del Rey victories. The 37-year-old emerged through Barcelona’s famous Ramasian youth system and dedicated 18 years to the Catalan giants before switching to MLS in 2023. He currently features former Barca legends Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba and Luis Suarez.
The rising midfielder was intertwined with Pep Guardiola’s coaching breakthrough as it became a pivotal component of the Tikitaka philosophy that allowed Barcelona to dominate European football.
That victory was carried over to international duties with Spain, where Busquets accumulated 137 appearances.
Confirming his retirement on Instagram, Busquets declared:
“I am truly grateful to all.
InterMiami declared in a statement. “Since joining Intermiami CF in 2023, Basket has contributed to the club’s continued growth, contributing to his vision and quality in the midfield, as well as his experience and leadership, and playing a role in winning both the Supporters Shield and the League Cup.

“The team looks forward to his contributions in pushing towards the goal during the final stretch of the campaign, which has made him recognized as one of the biggest midfielders in football history, claiming numerous titles and accolades between FC Barcelona and the Spanish national team.”
Busquets will have the right opportunity to say goodbye to the game alongside his former Barcelona teammate Messi in Intermiami.
The MLS regular season will continue until mid-October, with the playoffs going to center stage until December.
Following this illustrious career, speculation has emerged about what lies beyond the basketball, and after leaving Barcelona in 2023, Guardiola hinted that he was waiting for him.
“The basket was the best and I was able to read everything that would happen and predict the situation,” he said.
“He didn’t move much, but he didn’t move only in the center, but he managed to solve brain problems. It was fascinating to work with him and learn. I said that in my private life… I think he’ll be an exceptional coach.”
