The sharp Jose Mourinho slammed referee Sergio Guael for being “uncharacteristic” at a post-box press conference after Benfica scored the goal in an overwhelming 1-1 draw with Rio Avenue.
Mourinho, 62, agreed to make a quick return with Benfica earlier this month, just weeks after being fired by Fenerbafe. Former Chelsea, Manchester United and Real Madrid chiefs recorded their first match at the helm of the Portuguese club, 3-0, over the weekend, with the AVS. But Benfica was held by Rio Avenue, who won’t win Mourinho’s second match on Tuesday night.
The big buzz of the match revolved around Benfica’s unauthorized goal, which was denied a victory in the 91st minute. And the charismatic Portuguese coach, who had never been afraid to speak his mind at the iconic press conference for many years, did not thwart his latest post-match commentary on officials, claiming that Guelho “has no personality.”

“We didn’t do enough for the first half,” Mourinho said. “The second half was good within our limits. We were dominant, offensive, creating opportunities and always playing on half the pitch.
“We scored a goal. If this is a new football, if the goal is ruled out because the grab is stepping into another small toe, I don’t like this new football, but it has to keep accepting it. Finally, I’ve kept receiving the goal.
“We’re not overly physical teams or strong in the air. We have to penetrate using other routes. In Earthness and Ivanovic, there’s very little width.
“We hit the break. A winning team can’t accept such a goal. That’s why we lost two points.”
Mourinho and Benfica are active against Gilvicente this weekend before returning to Stamford Bridge in the Champions League next week.
