Trevor East brokered its first football television contract in 1988. However, it argues the growing threat of copyright infringement.

According to TV executives, the 3pm blackout on Saturday must be discarded. When Soccer Blackout was first introduced to the UK game in 1988, former ITV head of Trevor East brokered the first live television deal.

But East, one of the most respected names in television sports, says it must be repealed as it warned that copyright infringement is the biggest threat to the Premier League.

The Premier League’s latest four-year television deal is worth £6.7 billion on Sky and TNT, allowing up to 270 live games to be exhibited during the season.

However, with Saturday’s blackout at 3pm last weekend, Premier Sports won by Real Madrid’s Espanyol and Motherwell defeated Aberdeen in the Scottish League Cup.

It’s rarely lifted, but East says it will inevitably change in 2029 as the threat of piracy is rising, saying it is at a serious risk of undermining the huge success of the Premier League.

Former Sky Executive East, who currently works at Pitch International, said:

“All illegal, dangerous fire sticks sold for £75 will lose subscribers, causing damage to the model, making it more difficult and reducing the value of the rights.

“Even in the current trade, it was more money, but it was more games and each live game was less valuable. They did that to ensure the money went up, but what can we do next?

“They need to show more games and eliminate blackouts. When many people are looking at illegal streams or you have a pub or bar that shows the game illegally, it won’t work anymore.

“People overseas can see all the games, but we can’t. They have to find a way. It starts with discarding the blackouts so that people can see all the games if they want.”

East remembers how the blackout began when he and Trevor Phillips (the FA and Football League commercial officers) brokered the Landmark’s first live television deal.

It now looks like a world, but it started with 18 games that will be shown live on Sunday, behind the UEFA directive when they requested a two-hour window when the match wasn’t displayed.

East added: “It was actually brought in in 1988. People keep saying the 1960s, but that’s not true. I got the UEFA directive so I did it.

“I remember being so nervous about being shown live and asking, “Would you kill the game at a grassroots level?” You had people like Brian Claff, and I was Matey with him, “Young guy, that’s going to kill our f***ing game.”

“Well, the truth wasn’t. There are so many games on TV these days, and I don’t think blackout actually has any effect.”
