Jeremy Frimon soon discovered that Hugo Ekichique was set to send himself out following Liverpool’s goal against Southampton in the third round of the Carabao Cup. The striker took off his shirt to celebrate the score, but he had already taken the yellow card and was soon second to referee Thomas Bramal.
Reservations for both came later, as Ekitique only appeared as a halftime replacement for Alexander Isaac. The former Newcastle United striker scored just before the break and opened up the score.
However, just eight minutes after the introduction of Ekitique, he was in the book for objections. The 23-year-old punched the ball in frustration, opposed the decision to award him a free kick.

Southampton was then equalised through Shea Charles, but this time Ekitique responded correctly, bringing Liverpool back forward within 10 minutes. But as soon as he tapped a pass across the goal from Federico Chiesa, the striker lifted his shirt and held it above his head.
While moving around, he embraced it by the crowd inside Anfield near the corner flag. However, after turning around, he saw the expression on Frimon’s face, the realization began to sink.
The fullback thrusts him into his chest and says his work, then speaks to his teammates to animate while stretching out his arms. Liverpool head coach Arne Slot appeared confused by his side job.
Ekitike will miss a Premier League match against Crystal Palace over the weekend as it offers one-match suspension for a send-out. Isak will likely start ahead of time at the player’s location and, if so, mark the club’s full league debut after being featured only as an alternative to the Merseyside Derby with Everton at Anfield last weekend.
“If he had to score the goal like he did tonight, I would turn around and walk to Federico Chiesa and say, ‘It’s all about you, a great assist,'” Reds boss Slot said after the match.
“But it might be that I was a bit old school. It was stupid in every sense. His teammates helped him. But he’s now suspended on Saturday, and that’s far from ideal.”
