Noni Madueke is set to miss at least six weeks of action for Arsenal after the England winger suffered a knee injury during a draw with Manchester City on Sunday

Mikel Arteta has admitted that Noni Madueke will be a “big mistake” for Arsenal after the English winger was ruled out for at least six weeks. Madueke injured his right knee during Sunday’s draw with Manchester City, and scans revealed he is now facing an injury layoff.

It could also dominate Madueke from the next two English camps, a serious blow for the £52 million winger who has been hit so hard since the move from Chelsea to Arsenal.

Maduke is expected to go out for six to eight weeks, but Arteta says a more accurate timescale may not be known until next week.

Gunners boss Arteta said: “Yeah, he’ll be out for a few weeks. We don’t really know yet. We’ll probably have to do another scan next week.

“Like I said, we need to scan him again to see the real extent of the injury, but that doesn’t look that bad. Yeah, he obviously was a very unfortunate to see him as he was in such a good condition.

“He looked like a real threat. He had gained consistency and now he was flowing into the team and he looked like a real threat, so that’s a big mistake for us.”

Arsenal’s new defender Piero Hinkapie is also missing from the team to head to Port Vale in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.

Arteta expects it to be a short-term layoff, but Martin Odegaard is hoping to face Newcastle next Sunday.

Arsenal is expected to make many changes to his trip to Port Vale, where he is ready to play backup keeper Kepa Arizabaraga.

Also, 15-year-old Max Dowman may be out and about, claiming that Arteta is ready for the chance. However, Arteta urged attention to Douman, suggesting that all the bases were covered.

When asked about Arrizabalaga, Arteta added:

First of all, he prepares and understands everything different in Max’s new situation and his life. So we need to change his era. He needs to be with his education, perhaps his allocation and his family.

“He eats differently, his sleep patterns are different, his training loads are different, his amount of information, his exposure to pressure is different.

“So we need to manage a lot of factors. To many factors, you add a lot of minutes to a very different team. We need to be careful and very, very careful.

“And that’s what we’re trying to do in the best possible way. Find that balance and keep Max connected as much as possible with the first team. He’s definitely a player who can help the first team.

“That’s why he needs the right few minutes of mixture when he needs to play with us to make that exposure the other day (under the age of 21) or when he needs to play in the UK. He’s ready to do that.”
