Manchester United have a rocky start to the Premier League season, earning one win, one draw and two losses in their first four matches. The result has made them suffer in 14th place on the table, and have only secured four points out of the 12 possibilities so far.

The 3-0 defeat at the hands of rival Manchester City was a bitter medicine for United fans to engulf them. The unstable start again poses doubts about the future of manager Reuben Amorim.

Despite emitting about £200 million new talent during the summer transfer period, including forwarding strikers Benjamin Sesco, Brian Mbeumo and Matthew Cunya, the team’s early performance highlights ongoing issues within the team. With the summer transfer period now closes firmly, it appears that they will have to wait until January for any further changes to the team.

Amidst increasing pressure, Amorim may already be considering his options for winter windows. Successful January will help alleviate some of the tensions of Portuguese bosses.

So, what might the ideal January window look like for Amorim and United?

When it comes to incoming players, there is no doubt that strengthening the midfield is at the top of United’s agenda. The club tried to secure new players in the summer.

However, the Brighton company refused to sell Carlos Bereba, leading to abandoning the potential deal. But they may decide to try their luck again in January.

If so, consultations could be launched in the hopes of a deal being fired between all parties. The addition of Baleba could provide Bruno Fernandes more room, even if he’s operating in a deeper midfield position.

Another name recently linked to United is Elliot Anderson of Nottingham Forest. The midfielder turned his head with England’s performances against both Andorra and Serbia during his international break.

The former Newcastle player has demonstrated his ability to command the game and set the pace. But like Baleba, signing a contract with Forest may not be easy, especially as he wants to retain key players, especially during his first transfer with Ange Postecoglou’s club.

Another area where United are likely to need additional coverage is right backing away from midfield. Currently, Diego Dallot and Nusea Mazrawi are two recognized players from the team that is in their position.

Only one injury or halt means United lacks the option. United have been linking with Inter’s interest in Denzeldan Fleece for some time.

The fullback recently confessed that he is open to travelling to the Premier League and brings experience and quality to the defensive aspect.

If United can secure both Baleba and Anderson, or both the other defensive midfielders in the January window, Kobbie Mainoo can pave the way for him to leave on loan for the rest of the season. The midfielder expressed his desire for a temporary move over the summer, but United declined.

Adding a new midfield option will allow academy alumni to seek regular playing times elsewhere.

Defender Tyler Fredrickson could also be loaned out. With Lisandro Martinez expected to return from injury in the coming months, if the centre-back can quickly regain match fitness, he will provide enough defensive cover to allow the 20-year-old to increase his first-team soccer experience.

Chido Obi may be loaned out by another player. Despite making his United debut last season, the striker has not made a match-day team this season, playing for the Under21 team. The Lone spell could potentially return as an improved player as more exposed in the first team football later in the season.

Tyrell Malacia may be on the crisis of a permanent exit. It was rumored that the fullback would leave in the summer, but the transfer never came to fruition.
