Liverpool strengthened their Champions League teams with two new additions ahead of their showdown with Atletico Madrid at Anfield tonight. According to the official UEFA website, the Reds team list for the season’s opening league phase fixture consists of 24 players.
The trio of Alison Becker, Freddie Woodman and Giorgi Mamaldashvili are listed as goalkeepers, and Woodman is set to make his debut on the match-day team since his summer free transfer from Preston North End. This is possible to allow clubs to list 12 alternatives for matches, by UEFA rules. That’s three or more than the Premier League allows. However, this means that one of the 24 will be removed from the team.
It seems likely that Curtis Jones has missed it after confirming at his Tuesday press conference that the midfielder is not worthy of playing despite his scheduled training with the team on Wednesday before the Atletico game. Nevertheless, he remains on the official team list and has an icon indicating his injury status.
The Alexis Mac Allister has an icon next to his name indicating that he is a potential fitness suspect. Trey Nyoni is featured in 24, drafted from the club’s B-list after becoming an unused replacement at Burnley over the weekend.
Jaden Duns is drafted under a different name. He has not been included in the senior match-day team since the start of this season. However, the centre forward made two appearances in Under 21 last month after bouncing off a preseason back injury.
His participation in the team could potentially affect Alexander Isaac’s game time, with Slot acknowledging that the new signature is not 90 minutes. However, he admitted that Swedish International “have a definite chance” to make his debut in the face of Atletico.
