Manchester City won the race for Gianluigi Donnalma and made his winning debut against Manchester United, but Peter Schmeichel admits he didn’t persuade the keeper to move to Old Trafford
Peter Schmeichel has admitted that he tried to get Gianluigi Donnaruma to join Manchester United this summer after the new Manchester City goalkeeper enjoyed his winning debut in the Manchester Derby, and failed.
Pep Guardiola swooped down on the deadline to sign PSG’s Champions League winner after it was revealed he lost his favor in Paris. Just a few months after playing a key role in the success of the European Cup, the Italian is now set to establish himself as Guardiola’s No. 1 in Etihad.
He made his debut with a clean sheet as City did a light job on his neighbors and won 3-0 on Sunday afternoon.
Donnaruma himself was badly linked to the move to the Red Devils before the Etihad people came to the party. The Italian devalued him with a stellar save in the second half, cleverly uttering Brian Mbeumo volley, and was still 2-0.
Schmeichel admits he had had discussions with Donnaruma in the past and tells him to head towards the red side of Manchester – just watch him turn into the blue half.

“I was able to convince him to come for an interview once. We went back to the studio and asked our first question. He started answering in Italian. I had no clue! Last season, I kept telling him, ‘I want you at Man United.’
The presenter joked when Dane answered that he failed in his attempt to become a successful agent. “I went to him. He showed it, he gave it to the team today, but it wasn’t him.”
Donnarumma came straight and removed James Trafford, who was signed by Burnley and was the new starter of the first three games. That motive was that Edason moved on, and the legendary Brazilian joined Fenerbafe.
United’s goalkeeping situation changed dramatically over the summer, with Senne Lammens appearing at the deadline. The Belgians are somewhat unknown, and after Andre Onana gives a surprising loan to Turkey, he now fights Altai Bayindir.
Reuben Amorim supported his departure, as he said.
“As a club, and I think Andre felt it was a moment of change a little. I don’t know the future, but it’s time to change Onana.”
