Jurgen Klopp returned to management after leaving Liverpool in 2024 and closed the door, but that has not stopped one of Benfica’s presidential candidates from targeting him

One candidate standing to become Benfica’s next president has vowed to make Jurgen Klopp the club’s next manager if he succeeds in next month’s election.

Klopp, 58, has not managed the club since leaving Liverpool at the end of the 2023-24 campaign. Since then, the German took on a new role away from the dugout as Red Bull’s global football manager, and has heavily hinted at the management taking place amid the links with various clubs over the past 12 months.

However, potential Benfica president Christovor Carvalho has not stopped him from aiming for former Premier League and Champions League winners if he takes power through Portuguese outfits. He also outlined some epic plans for the future, with the goal of reaching the Champions League final in the next five years.

“Together with me, Bruno Reiji (Benfica’s current head coach) explained in an interview with Portuguese outlet SIC Noticias ahead of the October 25th presidential election.

“We need a world-class coach who has already won the Champions League and wants to win the Champions League at Benfica. There’s only one name in my head: Jurgenklopp.

“It’s clear that we won’t be able to beat the Champions League today in Benfica,” Carvalho continued. “But I have a financial plan for that goal. Benfica fans can promise to play in the Champions League finals in four or five years.”

Carvalho has a design that seduces Klopp to Benfica, but it seems unlikely that former Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund chiefs would consider such a move. He revealed in June that he was enjoying life away from management and didn’t sound like he was in a hurry to get back to the dugout.

“I don’t want that anymore,” Klopp told Welt when asked about the speculation he linked to Bayern Munich’s work. “I’m currently working in a job that fills me and does intense work. I don’t sleep long in the mornings, and I don’t sleep late at night, but I can better organize my work.

“My wife, for example, is completely happy about it because we can better plan things we couldn’t do before. It wasn’t about doing anything, it was about doing something different.

“I coached 1,081 games. I don’t include friendly games. If I count from 23, that’s about 1,200. Then there was a press conference and a media appointment.

“I was always responding, and in Liverpool, I added the task as a manager on top. There was really a lot of it.”
