UEFA implemented last-minute changes to European competition force regulations just days before the Champions League begins, potentially benefiting the often overlooked Premier League stars. The European elite tournament will begin next week, with six English from the record participating in the Champions League.
The highlights of the first Match Week include Chelsea’s trip to face Harry Kane and Bayern Munich, Premier League champions and current table topper Liverpool welcome Atletico Madrid.
These clubs will be allowed to modify teams submitted during the group stage alongside fellow Champions League participants Manchester City, Arsenal, Tottenham, Europa League representatives Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest, and Conference League participants Crystal Palace.
In a statement Thursday, UEFA announced: “The Executive Committee has approved amendments to regulations for the 2025/26 UEFA Men’s Club Competition, allowing temporary replacement of up to one outfield player with long-term injury or illness at the league stage until Match Day 6 is included.
“The reason for adaptation is to ensure that squad lists are not unfairly reduced and that players are protected from additional workload pressures.”
Matchday Six represents the fixture that concludes with the first Conference League phase, with eight phases of the Champions League and Europa League contest Matchday 7 and eight New Year phases.
Chelsea could replace Liam Dellup, who was injured on the Champions League team with a new signature Facundo Buononotte after a hamstring injury that sidelined the British striker.
Other well-known players who miss out on their side’s Champions League teams are Liverpool forward Federi Cochiesa, Tottenham striker Mattistel and Arsenal Marksman Gabriel Jesus.
UEFA has also confirmed that Atletico Madrid’s home ground, Metropolitan Stadium, will host the 2027 Champions League Final.
The opportunity marks the second hosting since 2019 when Liverpool won Tottenham in an All-Premie League showdown.
Meanwhile, the Women’s Champions League final of the same year will be held at the National Stadium in Warsaw, Poland.
