With four points and an embarrassing cup exit from three Premier League matches, Manchester United got off to an overwhelming start to the 2025-26 season, raising doubts about Reuben Amorim’s position.

Michael Owen believes that Reuben Amorim will be successful at Manchester United if given time, and blames his struggle against a more “deep-rooted” issue. United boss Amorim was appointed in November 2024 and has since won only eight of eight of the 30 Premier League matches.

The Portuguese were under great pressure ahead of the international break, thanks to a 97-minute penalty from Bruno Fernandez before his team snatched a 3-2 victory at Burnley’s home. Behind the worst Premier League finish in history for the Red Devils, who missed European football, Amorim was supported with a signature worth £226.8 million during the summer transfer period.

Their fate has yet to be clearly changed, but Owen is “absolutely” sticking to Amorim, claiming that the former sports Lisbon manager “does it right.” To speak football through Betselect only on Mirrial, the former integrated striker was asked if he thought Amorim was the right guy to restore his old club to the Champions League.

“I will,” replied Owen. “I’m going to be a Pro Amorim. I like what I’ve heard and what I see. I want to see fast progress, and I’m not saying he’s exempt from criticism at all.

“United has chuured so many good managers, so people need to realize that it’s not a manager. There’s something the club, the players, the staff, the ownership, the managers, the whole thing needs to grow and improve. It takes a little time.

“I don’t change my manager every two minutes, I’ll go back rather than move forward. So I’ll stick to him, absolutely. He has the right head on his shoulder.

Owen went on to claim that the humiliating defeat of the Carabao Cup was banned in the town of Grimsby in the Carabao Cup. “Grimsby was pretty Grimm, right?” admitted the former England star.

“But apart from that, I think it was a solid enough start, a better team against Arsenal, pulling towards Fulham, defeating Burnley, facing it, they are pretty positive.

“Listen, I’m not saying it’s great, but the point of four out of three games, it’s not the worst. It’s not the worst start. Grimsby’s game was a killer. It wasn’t pretty at all. It obviously didn’t need the club at all.

“But I like some of the signatures they made and I think they’ll be a better team this year. I think there’s progress. I think it’s going to be a slow progress, but it seems they’ve done some proven players in their business this year and this season.”

The Red Devils will be active on Sunday, traveling around town against bitter rival Manchester City.
