Pep Guardiola and Reuben Amorim are in the same position than Sunday’s Manchester Derby

For Pep Guardiola and Reuben Amorim, the stakes heading for the Manchester Derby on Sunday are high.

You have to return for nearly five years when Manchester United were on top of Manchester City, a local Premier League rival, heading for the Derby.

In December 2020, both sides portrayed a terrible charm behind the locked rooms of Old Trafford, and the world has still embraced the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

The deadlock saw the point and place above Pep Guardiola’s side, with Ole Gunner Solskier unity remaining seventh, but the Bruce won the title and the Red Devils won the second spot.

Watching assert these two positions, what would both give to you to return to your form? City heading for Sunday’s Derby at Etihad Stadium, United, who finished 15th last season, is now 9th and is waning in unfamiliar territory at 13th.

Neither team was impressed when the new campaign began. United are struggling with a humiliating EFL Cup exit to League 2 Grimsby, taking a lonely victory over newly declared Burnley from three league fixtures.

City, who has transitioned like United, has endured an even worse start. An opening 4-0 victory at the Wolves – outliers following the outliers followed by a back-to-back defeat to Tottenham and Brighton, Guardiola’s team is already six points behind champions and league leader Liverpool.

Against this backdrop, expectations on both sides of Manchester’s football gap are naturally lower than Sunday’s Derby, with neither team encountering similarities in shape or confidence. United may have entered an international break in the background of a 3-2 victory over Clarett, but they ditched the lead twice and needed a controversial 97-minute penalty from Captain Bruno Fernandez to secure three key points.

£230 million in the summer spends on Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko, defender Diego Leon and goalkeeper Senne Lammens, but United remains an ongoing work under Ruben Amorim.

Guardiola has no such concern about his position as the city has brought unprecedented success in its nearly a decade of tenure, but he will need to win a terrible Sunday about the crisis in Manchester’s blue half after a summer of major departures that includes Kevin De Bruin, Kyle Walker and goalkeeper Edason.

One of the most fascinating aspects of Sunday’s Derby is between the posts of both teams. Ederson’s £26 million alternative, Gianluigi Donnarumma, makes his debut with City goals, but for United, the goalkeeper identity for their first choice is not certain.

On the way to Trabzonspor on a season-long loan, Altay Bayindir and New Arrival Lammens fight to fight it in United’s No. 1 spot. The £18.2 million new arrival Runmen is clearly United’s long-term No. 1, but Amorim could stick with Bay Indeal on Sunday.

Both parties do not have key players, which can have a major impact on the quality of the game. The city has lost Rayan Cherki, Omar Mamasch and Mateo Kovacic, but there are doubts about Phil Foden and John Stones, Savigno, Abdukodil Kushanov and Josko Gvaldior. United don’t have Cunha, Mason Mount or Diogo Dalot. This means reshuffling of Amorim’s defense and attack.

Strangely enough, City’s only victory in their final four meetings with United was a penalty shootout victory at the Community Shield last season. Before the goalless draw in April, there was a 2-1 smash-and-glove victory on Amorim’s side last December, but Eric Tenhag won the FA Cup on the same scoreline in May 2024.

For Guardiola and Amorim, Sunday is a game that they can’t afford to lose. That’s why Cagey Draw seems to be the most likely outcome.
