Rio Ferdinand is pleased to see the behind-the-scenes of Manchester United’s Andre Onana and “suffered” him over the past year. Onana will leave United for an in-season loan with Turkish side Trabzonspor after Senne Lammens arrives during the summer transfer period.

Onana was the first choice goalkeeper since moving from Inter Milan to Old Trafford in 2023. However, his volatile performance led Altai Bay Indeal to play number one this season before Ranmen arrived on a £18 million move from Royal Antwerp on transfer deadline.

Therefore, the former Ajax goalkeeper, signed by Erik Ten Hag, agreed to join Trabzonspor for the 2025/26 campaign. United will not receive mortgage reports, but the Turkish side will not have the opportunity to sign Cameroon International forever.

But speaking of the Rio Ferdinand Presents, former United defender Ferdinand is pleased that the club has found a solution. “I think the club’s football management (Omar Berada) pointed out that he doesn’t have a player who is not worthy of being in the football club anymore,” he said.

“They don’t have players who aren’t doing enough, they’re not performing well or who aren’t the right person to be in a football club. He’s not going to take them with them like a foul smell.

“We were forced to keep players because of the bad financial situation the club had us with the players, and we had to keep them here, sit with them and suffer some of these players.”

Reuben Amorim began the summer by creating a “bomb squad” of unnecessary players, including Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony, Alejandro Garnacho and Tyrell Malacia. United were able to offload all players except Malacia in the end, but Rasmus Hozilund, Victor Lindelof and Christian Eriksen also left the club.

The bomb squad approach has been controversial in United, but Ferdinand ultimately feels it has been proven. “I think this is a step in the right direction,” Ferdinand added. “Like players who come and make a difference in speed, dynamism, pace and goal threat, I am pleased, if not more, in the way the club kicks out players they think are there.

“That aspect was more important, if not more, than the players coming in because I think it sends a great message and a strong message to the players there.

“It’s like it’s like at every club. If you’re not worthy of a football club, you have to go outside. So when a player wants to go, he should be able to force him to go.
