Ineos Energy, Im Ratcliffe co-owner of Manchester United, has declared that they are withdrawing funds in the UK and turning their investment into the US.

Ineos Energy, the oil and gas production and trade arm of Ratcliffe’s empire, had recently poured money into Scottish oil refineries.

However, with the Grangemouth Oil Refinery closed in April 2025, INEOS Energy executive chairman Brian Gilvary admits that further investment in the UK is currently off the table.

Speaking to the telegraph, Gilbury said:

“The problem is that the UK has become one of the most unstable fiscal regimes in the world in terms of natural resources and energy.

“That means we can’t invest for sure because we can’t be sure what the tax rates will be in the future,” Manchester Evening News reports. Ineos Energy currently plans to invest £3 billion in the US oil and gas industry, but there is no proposal that this could lead to Ineos’ sports business withdrawal from United.

Last month, Daily Mail revealed that the Drag Athour Athor clause in the business agreement between Glazers and Ratcliffe is currently in effect.

Simply put, this allows American majority stakeholders to sell the entire club shares, including Ineos’s stock, to another buyer whose Ratcliffe cannot prevent it.

These provisions are usually included to stop minority stakeholders from binding to ransom by refusing to sell. Ratcliffe openly acknowledged the clause and suggested that he hoped it would not be triggered, but he could find himself in a troublesome situation if Sheikh Jasim bin Hamad Al Thani decided to renew his interest.

However, according to the email, Qatari businessmen rarely do so. Given the success of Katari owned PSG and the monumental challenge of bringing the Red Devils back to their former glory, the appetite for purchasing United appears to be low.

Instead, Qatar’s focus appears to have shifted to securing hosting rights for the 2036 Olympics. The main competition in the game is now India.
