Both Manchester City and Manchester United are concerned about injuries heading into Sunday’s Derby at Etihad Stadium following a bruising international break for the club
The international break has ended and players have returned to the club over the next few days ahead of their return to the Premier League this weekend.
Tensions are high in Manchester, with the derby between Manchester City and Manchester United on Sunday on the horizon at Etihad Stadium. Both sides started the season slowly, and Pep Guardiola’s team was particularly difficult after losing back-to-back league games.
City charged a 1-0 lead with a 2-1 loss to Brighton before an international break following a 2-0 defeat by Tottenham. So Guardiola had boiled down his break in an attempt to formulate his approach to the Derby, but now his plans are affected by concerns of new injuries.
Meanwhile, Reuben Amorim entered a happy break for the two after United won the first victory of the season against Burnley. Omar Marmash is unavailable in the city after suffering a knee ligament injury in Egypt’s World Cup qualifier against Burkina Faso on Tuesday. The 26-year-old forward, who started City’s final two games, was kicked out in the ninth minute of his country’s goalless draw at Ougadugou.
He was injured in a heavy crash in four minutes and after receiving treatment on the field he played first, but he had to replace. The X-account of the Egyptian Football Association writes, “Omar Marmash suffers from injured knee ligaments.”
City issued a statement Wednesday with the following: “The initial results of the scans run in Egypt show that he is not available for the Manchester Derby on Sunday, and he will return to Manchester for more evaluations and begin rehabilitation.
After the summer signature from Lyon was ruled out for two months with thigh injuries, City is certainly not out of Rayan Cherki. This was confirmed after Brighton’s defeat. Attacks also have more issues. Phil Foden missed the Brighton Games team, and Savigno is also absent. The club hopes that both will return this weekend, and Guardiola will provide updates at pre-game press conferences.
Elsewhere, there are other suspicions after being forced to withdraw from the English team with long-term absentees from Mateo Kovacic and Calvin Phillips and muscle damage from the John Stones.
Abdukodir Khusanov was replaced with a knock at the end of the Brighton game, but is expected to return against United, while Josco Gvaldior has not been featured this season yet.
United have fewer concerns to consider, but Lisandro Martinez remains on the sidelines when he recovers from a long-term knee injury.
Amorim hopes Diogo Darott recovers after breaking out of the Portuguese team with “muscular discomfort,” while the United boss will be updating the status of Mason Mount and Mateus Cunha after picking up an injury to Burnley.
“We’ll check them out,” he said after the match. “We need those guys to be really badly competitive.” On social media there were positive signs from Cunha, posting a photo of myself on my exercise bike during the break.
