Man UTD rented out Jadon Sancho to Aston Villa at the transfer deadline, but the Red Devils could have avoided the Winger’s turbulent tenure if they listened to Pep Guardiola’s warnings
When Manchester United finally signed the winger in 2021, Pep Guardiola’s warnings about Jadon Sancho’s mentality fell into deaf ears.
However, the 25-year-old was unable to make a professional appearance in the city of Zens as he was shipped to Borussia Dortmund for a deal of around £8 million. In 2019, when asked why Sancho was sold rather than being deployed by Guardiola, the 54-year-old said, “I don’t know.
“He didn’t want to do this challenge (to fight his way into the first team), this opportunity to discover if he could. He decided to go there, so it’s perfect.

“He’s performed incrediblely. He’s done it incredibly well this season. What happened this season (City)?
Guardiola quickly shared his joy that Sancho was successful in the Bundesliga, but his comments on the winger’s will to fight for his place may have raised alarms among many managers.
Between 2017 and 2021, Sancho’s tally of 50 goals and 64 assists on 137 outings by Die Schwarzgelben was charming enough to see United snap him in a £73 million move after lingering his signature.
However, his tenure with the Red Devils has been far from smooth sailing for years since. In his first two seasons at Old Trafford, Sancho managed just nine Premier League goals from 55 games. He then rejoined Dortmund after quitting his performance in Eric 10 hugs and training.

Meanwhile, Sancho quickly fought back at the manager’s comments, claiming he was being used as a “scapegoat.” He wrote on social media: “Don’t believe everything you read.
“I don’t allow people to say things that aren’t entirely true. I’ve been in training very well this week. I think there are other reasons for this issue that I don’t get in. I’ve been a scapegoat for a long time.
“What I want to do is play football with a smile on my face and contribute to the team. I respect every decision the coaching staff has made. I play with great players and I appreciate what I know every week.
The British returned to Dortmund on a short-term loan in January 2024, then returned to the Red Devils in the summer, drawing a line with 10 hugs on the discrepancy. However, his tenure at Old Trafford didn’t last long, joining Chelsea on an in-season loan on a performance-dependent £25 million mandate.
Despite a somewhat fruitful campaign with Chelsea, the board ultimately chose not to exercise its mandatory purchase, paying a £5 million penalty instead, and saw Sancho return northwest under the new boss Ruven Amorim. But once again, his tenure at Old Trafford was reduced when the Portuguese tactician deemed him a surplus in terms of his own plans.
As a result, Sancho secured a transfer deadline to Aston Villa on loan, where he hopes for a return of the Premier League under Unai Emery. Given that Sancho’s contract expires next summer, there is no obligation to be attached to the deal. However, the United Committee also has the option of extending its contract for a year to prevent it from leaving the club as a free agent.
