Michael Owen spoke about England’s captain Harry Kane’s decision to move to the Bundesliga along with Bayern Munich, despite Kane’s first league title with the club.
Former England striker Michael Owen doubled his belief that Harry Kane had been wrong to trade the Premier League for the Bundesliga. Kane left Tottenham Hotspur for Bayern Munich in the summer of 2023, winning the first domestic title of his Bayern career last season.
Owen worked abroad and spent a year with Real Madrid before returning to British football. However, he pointed out the difference from his own situation when he left Liverpool to Keynes when he moved abroad.
“Harry Kane is just fatal and he’s a great finisher,” Owen told the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast. “I didn’t agree he would go to Germany. I was frank about it. I think he was a nut.
“You’re on the crisis of being the best Premier League goal scorer of all time. You all have kids in school, meaning I couldn’t see it. I don’t see it.
Owen questioned how great it was for Kane to win the Bundesliga on the dominant Bayern side, rather than breaking the record at home. “It would have been incredible to be the top scorer in the Premier League so far,” he added.

Kane has the chance to pass Alan Shearer’s best Premier League record of all time. His Bayern contract expires in the summer of 2027, a few weeks before his 34th birthday.
He left the Spurs after scoring goals for the club’s 213 league. 47 Total Shearer shy posted over 14 seasons in Blackburn and Newcastle. Liverpool’s Mohamed Sarah is the joint fourth of 187 goals and the most active player in the highest rankings of all time.
Since Kane traded London for Munich, two of his former Bayern teammates have moved in opposite directions. Mathys Tel completed a permanent move to the Spurs this summer after spending the second half of last season on loan, but Joao Palhinha is currently on loan at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, allowing the move to be permanent in 2026.
“He has great potential,” Kane said of French forward Tell after Bayern’s game against the Spurs in the preseason. “Whether he’s a left winger or playing as a striker, he’s going into a dangerous area and he can finish the ball well and he’s one good one.
“I don’t want to put too much pressure on him. He goes to the Premier League. He’s got a lot of experience here, but he’s still very young.
