Liverpool reportedly lined up the return of Jarrell Quanza two years later following the defender’s departure this summer. The 22-year-old centre-back completed a £35 million move to Bayer Lebekusen in July and signed a five-year contract with the Bundesliga giants.
Quansah, part of the English side that beat Germany in the summer to win the European Under 21 Championship, marked his third transfer agreement between Liverpool and Leverkusen, following the move of Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz to Anfield. However, it is understood that Red tried to cover the base by agreeing to Quansah’s buyback clause. Liverpool Echo reports that the clause came into effect in 2027, giving the club the opportunity to re-sign academy graduates for €60 million (£51 million).
Quansah is also said to have agreed to a new, improved contract with Liverpool if he made a move for him two years later.
This means that Quanza’s move to Germany could essentially be a two-year loan, and then he will pay a premium to get him back if Liverpool chooses to do so. The clause shows that the Reds appreciate the youth, and he believes that they need regular game time to resolve wrinkles in the game.
Called to his latest England camp by Thomas Touchel for an international break this month, Quanza made his Premier League 17 appearance in a breakthrough season under Jurgencrop. However, he only made 13 appearances in the league under Arne Slot last season. The Reds won the title and the Dutch apparently had some reservations about the players.
He passed Liverpool Academy, making a total of 58 appearances for the club, scoring three goals, winning the League Cup in 2024. Kuanza scored last month in his debut against Hoffenheim by Leverkusen, playing 90 minutes of the first two league games of the season.
Following Quansah’s departure, Jiovanni Leoni, who completed a £26 million move from Parma in August, will see Quansah’s Konate, Virgil Van Dijk, Joe Gomez and new signature Giovanni Leoni, Slot’s current choices in central defense. The Reds also agreed to a £35 million deal for Crystal Palace captain Mark Guech, but the move was blocked by the Eagles in the final seconds of the transfer deadline.
If Liverpool won Guehi in January or next summer and chose to sign Quansah a year later, the British could face a lot of competition to create a lineup of their first teams. However, Conate’s future is still unknown as his contract expires next summer, but Gomez is approaching sealing off his own exit in recent months.
