Liverpool faced Arsenal on Sunday in a tasty showdown between the favourites of this season’s title, explaining why the Reds had to make changes this summer despite Arne Slot winning the title last season
Liverpool won the title in Canter last season, but Arneslot has looked well and made him believe there needs to be a change this summer. Ahead of the first blockbuster battle with Arsenal in the campaign’s Premier League title race, the Reds boss thought they couldn’t “romantic” everything about the glory of the previous season.
Liverpool have tweaked their team since lifting their 20th League Crown in May. Some of it is forced, some of it is optional. They have already spent about £300 million, and by Monday evening they have spent another £150 million to go to Alexander Isaac and Mark Guech. Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, Hugo Ekitike and Giovanni Leoni are outfield recruits. But they also brought £227 million to sales of players showing turnaround.
It also means that new players have to adapt. He has acquired Dominik Szoboszlai’s No. 10 slot position, including record-breaking purchase Wirtz, with the latter moving deeper into the midfield. Szoboszlai starred back to the right against Newcastle on Monday and was able to play again tomorrow. “The change is that not all games last season are Tottenham away or West Ham away, and we’ll tell the players that,” Slot said. “Whenever we win something, everyone just looks back at some great offenses and some big wins, but there were a lot of times we struggled in football games last season.
“Wolves, we didn’t even have a shot in the second half of the target at home game. Away, we won fortune, but the penalty was given right.
“Being as romantic as last season – and sometimes you make this mistake inside the building – I mean players – every time last season, most wins were just one goal, and we had to fight really hard for it.
“We said it 100 times last season. We didn’t win the league. City had been rising 4-0 at halftime for years, so we had to fight really hard for it.”
Liverpool is clearly not the only thing that will spend a lot of time. Tomorrow’s opponent at Anfield is spending £300 million and far less to get out the door. Both teams will take part in the game with a 100% record starting from the opening two games.
“We need to improve, but we need to improve compared to last season and we need to improve because competition has improved,” he continued.
One player that may not have improved due to the Reds is defender Ibrahimaconate. This is another reason why they are in Gehi’s market. The French defender was responsible for his victory goals at Bournemouth and Newcastle, but Slot cites the fact that he is no longer with Trent Alexander Arnold, who is by his side.
“I think he has something to improve,” he said. “But it would probably be different for him as well, starting this season with another fullback next to him.
“He and the team had Ryan (Greignbellch) for the first time against Newcastle, so I think it’s coordinated with each other as well, and in part, I think Eve’s greatest strength is of course the quality of his defense.”
