Manchester United reportedly decided not to appeal the decision to allow Grimsby to maintain their position this season in the Carabao Cup. The Red Devils were beaten to League 2 outfits last week in the second round, but Grimsby was later approved to protect ineligible players.

United were the second best ever encounter at Brandel Park, down 2-0 at halftime following goals from Charles Burnham and Tyrell Warren. Visitors eventually forced a penalty shootout after Brian Mbemo and Harry Maguire attacked in the second half to flatten their ties. However, Grimsby came to the top in the shootout. Mbeumo saw the decisive spot kicked Cannon away from the crossbar.

On Tuesday morning, Grimsby was slapped with a £20,000 fine after admitting to registering Clark O’Dour a minute before the deadline after lending it from Bradford the day before the clash with United.

Half of the fines have been suspended, and the EFL will not push David Artell’s team out of the competition.

United could have been resurrected if Grimsby was kicked out of the Carabao Cup.

However, according to the Daily Mail, Red Devils has not pursued anything more and has not considered sanctions as the lawsuit is closed.

“The situation leading to this violation is that Grimsby Town submitted its Clarke Oduor registration at 12:01 pm, just after the required deadline in accordance with the competition rules of 2025/26,” read the statement from the EFL.

“The club self-reported the violation upon discovery the day after the fixture was completed.

“After a comprehensive review of all evidence, considering previous decisions committed regarding crimes in the League Cup, the board has determined that the issuance of fines followed precedent.

“The board further stated that the club’s violations were unintentional and unintentional. They then took several actions to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

“The club will be liable for a £10,000 suspension if they again acquire an ineligible player in the league competition from now until the end of season 2025/26.”

Manchester United endured the season’s disastrous start, earning only four points from three Premier League matches.

And cried out after being defeated by Grimsby. “The team and the players spoke really loudly today, so that’s it. We lost and the best team won.”
