Manchester United centre back Matty de Liguto threw his support behind tormented manager Reuben Amorim, claiming he wanted him to take the helm. Pressure on Amorim has been eased somewhat after Saturday’s thrilling 3-2 victory over Burnley.
This marked United’s first victory of the season and followed a humiliating Carabao Cup penalty shootout loss to League 2 side Grimsby at the beginning of the week. The shocking loss to Grimsby has bolstered Amorim’s scrutiny, but De Ligt acknowledged that players should bear much of their responsibility for the team’s inactive start of the season, claiming they trust their head coach.
When questioning whether United Squad wanted to stay in Amorim, Deligto replied:
“They always talk about managers, but as players, I think we’ve seen each other after Grimsby and told each other, ‘I can’t accept this week’s performance.’
“I think it’s really bad to say it’s the manager’s fault. It’s pretty much us and we know that. So obviously, we’re still standing behind him and he’s behind us, so we’ll continue like that. I think we’ll feel even more of the outcome today.”
United are set to visit local rival Manchester City to face two important challenges when they return from an international break.
Express Sport yesterday reported that he is still afraid that Amorim will be able to leave after United Bosses won Burnley. The Portuguese coach said:
“And I think we need to understand that we should always put this level of effort, even in the game, because we played well at first. I think we struggled because the game wasn’t that perfect and you can feel like the team struggled a little, especially because the teams.
“It ended well, I think we deserve to win the game. I think we created a lot of opportunities. We should go to halftime with greater advantages.”
