Manchester United and Reuben Amorim hit new lowest in the loss of the Carabao Cup at Grisby, putting pressure on the Portuguese boss to find the answer already

If Reuben Amorim thought Summer would act as a reset in the Manchester United disaster behind him, he proved very wrong Wednesday night.

For the first time in the club’s history, the Red Devils were beaten by a fourth-level team as Grimsby abandoned them from the Carabao Cup. An embarrassing night can be even worse. They were chasing 2-0 at halftime, but were gathered to force penalties before losing 12-11 in the shootout.

That means they tied with Fulham and lost to a team sitting fourth in League 2, as they opened three games in every tournament they lost to Arsenal.

Amorim knew that after a few months of poor tenure, he needed a quick start, but that didn’t happen. The pleasant factor that came from the dominant display against Arsenal has disappeared firmly, with dark clouds gathering.

Ineos knows he made the first management call wrong when assisting with Eric 10 hug, but he fired him a few months later. Amorims are their first employment and they are determined to prove that they can make these decisions right. That means giving time to the Portuguese coach, but that’s all.

The Bookies fantasized about him so he could be gone before the season was over. United returned from Grimsby at 1am Thursday, and the manager returned to Carrington at 7am just six hours later, to work following his latest humiliation. The players arrived at 11am.

Etihad’s Manchester Derby is more than two weeks away, and there could be a humiliating defeat in the terminal. Amorim continues to search for answers and once he sees what he can fix, he must return to the drawing again.

Starts firing attacks

It may seem engrossing to think that over £200 million has been spent on Brian Mbeumo, Matthew Cunya and Benjamin Sesco, but the team’s front line certainly doesn’t hum. There were some strange positive signs, especially from Cunha. However, an offense that is too expensive to assemble should require more than 250 minutes to acquire the first target of the season.

Arsenal kept them scoreless, and Fulham gave them a short lead via their own goal on Sunday. Many people thought that investment in attacks would solve itself, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

Put the anguish of Cunha and Mbeumo behind them

Ironically, United players received 13 penalties at Blundell Park. The only two men who missed the spot kick were the new arrivals Cunha and Mbeumo. The former female man missed a penalty that would have sealed the game, and Mbeumo’s efforts crashed out of the bar to send out Grimsby.

Amorim cannot afford to see two of his most powerful attack weapons falling his head. He needs to ensure that the additional pressure that comes with playing on the red side of Manchester does not squeeze them. Cunha is undoubtedly their best player, and the team can unfairly deny that their offense will be dull.

Sign the goalkeeper

Yes, that’s tough, but the error doesn’t stop from Andre Onana. He takes responsibility for another blunder, and the cry that United will change their No. 1 is gathering volume only. Although time is running out, the need for new goalkeepers is potentially greater than the strikers were needed this summer.

Gianluigi donnarumma has not left PSG yet, and he has linked to the Old Trafford Switch. It’s still not known how much budget United has left, but given Ir Jim Ratcliffe claims it’s a few weeks since he’s bust, they’re already spending a fair amount. Obviously there’s cash somewhere – and they need to use it on goalkeepers.

Give Sesco confidence

The £74 million striker should not see nine of his outfield teammates stepping past him in a penalty shootout, but that was the reality on Wednesday. Sesko is a man who is already struggling for confidence or someone who is afraid of failure. Neither is ideal. United have seen how slow the striker’s start can’t find their feet – Rasmus Hojlund is the case at that point.

Amorim left the Slovenians on the bench for United to open two games. He might cite the need to speed up, but all the other major strikers who have moved to the Premier League have been folded straight. Sesko didn’t draw any good pictures to United fans by stepping up late in the shootout, but Amorim has to do his part to make him feel like the main guy who needs him, at 22.

Finally, consider some pragmatisms

This can be deaf. For months, Amorim claimed that United hired him from the back of his sport’s success, which owed to his philosophy. But it’s very clear that this set of players doesn’t know what he wants.

The gaps and spaces in the sides were continuously exploited by League 2 teams on Wednesday. So it’s no wonder that Premier League outings had such joy. Amorim appears willing to come down on the boat, but he needs to decide whether to tweak the sack rather than tweak it.
