Diogo Darott argued that Manchester United’s humiliating defeat to Grimsby in the Carabao Cup was the player’s fault, not manager Reuben Amorim. United were knocked out of the tournament by the League 2 side in a penalty.

Brian Mbeumo and Harry Maguire’s late goal sent his ties into the shootout, but missed a spot kick from Mbeumo and Masteus Cunha saw United crash in the second round. Amorim was furious at his team’s performance and targeted the players after the match.

“I just want to say sorry to the fans. I have nothing to say about the performance,” Amorim said. “When everything is very important in our club and you try to do it all.

“You came from the preseason. Even Arsenal loses the game, but you’re there, you’re there, you’re improving, you see the performance, but you get to this kind of game when everything is very important at our club.

“And when you start a game like this… I think my players are really talking loudly about what they want, so I’m really sorry to our fans, I have nothing to say anymore.”

Darott was the only player to face the media after his defeat, and when asked about the future of his manager, he defended Amorim. “It’s our fault. We’re the people on the pitch,” he told ITV.

“We have to fight back. I think the message is really clear. Tomorrow is a new day and we need to show ourselves that we need to do more to be at this club. Today was not enough.

In another interview with MUTV, Dalot added:

“We fought back, but I think that is the minimum we can show today to fans who travelled for ourselves and the club, and that was clearly not enough.

“We came here, this competition, this club… they fought really hard and deserved to go through, so you can’t expect it to be easy.
