Brentford forward Joane Wissa issued a lengthy statement about his future one day before the end of the transfer window. Newcastle has been following the moves of Congo International, but has failed to reach an agreement with Brentford. Wissa is eager to join Magpies, but the time for the transaction to be completed is running out.
He hasn’t played for Brentford this season, informing the club of his desire to move ahead early this summer. According to the Daily Mail, they are requesting a £65 million transfer fee that Newcastle can price from the transaction. In a desperate bid to force an exit before Monday’s deadline, Wissa issued an extraordinary statement.
He wrote:
“I don’t think the club has been in my way despite a series of fair offers throughout the summer. Earlier this summer I had public discussions with senior club managers, including key directors and new head coaches.
“I have made clear my intention to explore new challenges. During these conversations I have confirmed with me and my representative that if a reasonable offer was received, the club will not get in my way, which was also done in writing.
“Based on this understanding, I tried to find a new club. Brentford brought full transparency at every stage.”
Wissa didn’t name Newcastle directly, but before Brentford accused him of returning to their words, he said he was approached by “another Premier League club.”
“I received a formal offer from another Premier League club and told them I wanted to participate,” he added. “I was given the impression from all my conversations with Brentford that there was a different mutual agreement.
“But once the windows were finished, the club now changed its position a lot and opposed what was told, which put me in a difficult and frustrating position.
“The promise that I can leave this summer is not fulfilled, and it makes me sad that I have to write it and I maintain full respect for the club and its fans.
“I want to make it clear that I’m not acting professionally and I don’t want to leave Brentford with bad words.
“I have been openly communicating with the club and continuing to do my own thing in a way that reflected my values as both a footballer and a human. I hope that a fair and reasonable solution will still be found before the transfer window closes.
“In the meantime, I have to do what I think is right for my career and my family, and Brentford has to insist on respecting their promise to let me join the new club and at a fair price.
“Being made to stay beyond this summer will only hurt four years at this incredible club, so I ask the Brentford owner and director to respect his promise to leave at the final hour of the window.”
