Reuben Amorim confessed after an international break that he could not guarantee he was still Manchester United’s manager. Fighting Amorim will face a critical clash with Burnley on Saturday after United’s shocking EFL Cup removal to League 2 side Grimsby on weekdays.

United sits in 16th place in the rankings as they only manage one point from the first two Premier League fixtures, and Amorim admits that there is no guarantee as to his position after such a disastrous beginning. When he questioned whether he was certain he would remain United’s manager beyond the upcoming international break. “I don’t know what will happen, but that’s what I think.

“But again, I’m not going to promise you anything about becoming the future. But I’m the manager of Manchester United and I don’t think that will change.”

Following the penalty shootout defeat at Blundell Park, Amorim declared that his players “were really loud about what they wanted” through their disastrous displays.

This was widely understood as suggesting that Amorim hinted at performance, and thus his team implied that he had lost confidence in him and his approach.

However, Amorim argued that his comments should not be conveyed and literally interpreted in the heat of the moment, and that he allowed his feelings to overwhelm him.

“Sometimes I hate players, sometimes I love my players, sometimes I want to protect my players,” Amorim said. “Sometimes I want to quit. Sometimes I want to be here for 20 years, sometimes I love my players, sometimes I don’t want to be here with them.

“This is my way of doing things and I’m going to be like that. I was frustrated and irritated. I know there are a lot of experienced players who say I should be more calm.

“But I was, and at that moment, I was really angry and disappointed.

“I felt the preseason was really good. We played badly against Fulham for 30 minutes, so I was really disappointed with everything.”
