Gary Neville believes that Reuben Amorim sent a subtle message to the Manchester United board that he needed a new midfielder after leaving Manuel Ugarte and Cobby Mine on the bench for a 1-1 draw at Fulham.
United are still waiting for their first victory of their new Premier League season after Emile Smith Lowe’s late strike nailed them following the opener of Renee Yoro.
Bruno Fernandez had the opportunity to move the Red Devils ahead of the penalty spot in the first half after Calvin Bassy pulled down the area’s Mason Mount, but the United captain inflated his efforts all along.
Fernandez claims that despite criticism of the former Real Madrid star’s recent performance, he begins in the middle with Casemiro and does not have a pace to thrive at the top level.
However, Amorim appears to prefer the veteran Brazilian as one of the midfield pivots. He started him in both United’s first two games, but Ugarte and Maine are forced to accept seats on the bench of the submarine.

Many fans wonder why Amorim isn’t giving either player a chance, but former United defender Neville thinks the manager has made a big statement about the quality of his options in the middle of the park.
Speaking about Sky Sports, he said: “It tells us what he’s thinking about Ugarte and Cobby Mine right now. The message above is saying, ‘Get a midfield player’.”
fellow critic Clinton Morrison also commented on the situation. He told BBC Radio 5 Live that Mainoo’s outlook appears to be bleak after Ugarte was brought from the bench and the English man was left as an unused submarine.
“Amorim loves Ugarte, but he’s thinking about this situation. “What did Mine have to do to get into this middle?”
United have linked to many midfield targets in the summer transfer window, including Brighton star Carlos Valleva, but the move hasn’t come to fruition.
Molten hjulmand in Sports Lisbon, Adason in Atalanta and star Angelo Stiller in Stuttgart have also been mentioned as options, but United are running out of time to sign new additions by the deadline of September 1st.
United have spent nearly £200 million on signing, including £72 for Benjamin Sesco, £71 million for Brian Mbeumo and around £62.5 million for Mash Cunha, but all three players are forwards.
