Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandez missed the penalty in a 1-1 draw with Fulham, and Reuben Amorim admitted that the midfielder wasn’t happy with how the game went.

Reuben Amorim said Bruno Fernandez was unhappy in a 1-1 draw with Manchester United’s Fulham.

The 30-year-old Red Devils captain missed a penalty on Sunday’s trip to the capital after skiing a spot kick in the first half. A unique goal from Rodrigo Muniz ultimately defeated the deadlock on the time mark, but United were rejected all three points by Emile Smith Lowe, who hit the 73rd minute.

Fernandez was United’s most influential and consistent player during a chaotic time for the club, enduring the worst Premier League campaign of the previous period, finishing in 15th place.

Portugal International played as part of a midfield pairing at Craven Cottage rather than a more advanced role, and Amorim appeared to acknowledge the captain’s overall involvement after the match.

“I don’t think he’s used to missing out on penalties. He knows the importance of this moment (and a) that this is important,” Amorim told Sky Sports. “During the game, he wasn’t involved and he was so responsible, so he wasn’t happy. I think he thought missing the penalty was a big deal for us.”

As a result, Amorim added: “We can get better, but we’re putting in effort, so that’s the most important thing for me. We were doing well, especially at the start of the game. After the goal, we were thinking about the outcome. We were fine to the goal and not smart at that moment.”

“We have to think about performance. We know what the feelings of players are like that need to win every game. We have to missed penalties, missed some chances, then scored and followed that goal.

Fernandez was visibly annoyed when Chris Cabana accidentally hit him just before he prepared to take a penalty in the first half. The Manchester United captain refused to blame the incident on a missed spot kick with Cabana, but was not satisfied with the judge’s failure to apologise.

“Yeah, I was upset,” Fernandez told Sky Sports after the match. “Obviously, as all the penalty takers, you have your own routine, so you have your own thing.

“It upset me because the referee didn’t apologise. That was what caused me in that moment. But it’s not an excuse to miss the penalty. I had a very bad hit on the ball. I also took my foot under the ball.
