The foundation, founded after Liverpool forward Dio Gojota’s death, is under scrutiny after claiming that he had no ties with his family because of the football club. The Diogo Jota Foundation has been receiving donations since three days after the death of the footballer, and is said to have raised less than £50,000.
The foundation is advertised via the Diogojotafoundation.org domain name and claims it raised £47,715 in donations as of Thursday, August 21st. However, it is not believed to be affiliated with football clubs, his family, or most of the organizations featured on its website.
The site boasts the logos of Liverpool FC, UNICEF, Allianz and Portugal development NGOs, but according to Telegraph, at least three people don’t know about the basics. The outlet claims that these organizations are not cooperating with the foundation, and the logos are being used without permission.
Additionally, the Charitable Committee has confirmed that the Foundation has not yet submitted its application for registration. It claims it has registered offices in the capitals of Lisbon, New York, London and Portugal.
The website’s landing page reads: “I celebrate Diogojota’s legacy and move forward the light he has left behind through football, education and hope.
“The Diogo Jota Foundation was conceived with one goal in 2025. It is to celebrate and advance the spirit of Diogo’s incredible journey from Gondoma’s small youth academy to one of Europe’s most respected football players.” It says its core pillars include developing a soccer program for young talent, providing scholarships and mentoring, and building community partnerships.
