Aston Villa has been fined £125,000 after violating Premier League rules for the fifth time multiball system, and the club is banned from using it in the first three games of the new season.

In total, Villa was fined £305,000 for consistently misusing the system from the beginning of the 2024/25 season. This is designed to flow through the match as the ball is thrown straight onto the pitch following a stop of play.

In the club’s final home match of the season against Tottenham Hotspur, they pushed back-to-back Champions League qualifiers for their second season. The goal of Ezri Konsa and Boubacar Kamara beat the Spurs, but the club was determined to have misused the multiball setup.

In addition to the fine, the villains are banned from operating their multiball systems in their home matches against Newcastle, Crystal Palace and Fulham in the first three home matches of the season. That follows the Spurs as well as clubs that have been punished for indiscretion last season against Manchester United, Bournemouth, Crystal Palace and Brentford.

Against Lily White, Villa opposed the guidance in a variety of ways. The ball assistant provided replacement balls from the cone directly to the villa players, providing throwing and corners when they were not permitted to do so.

Additional ball assistants were located behind the goal Aston Villa was attacking, and owned the additional ball to offer midland side players before a corner kick. In contrast, the opposition eventually attacked, no additional assistants were set up, and the correct number of balls were placed in the area.

And at one point, the Tottenham goalkeeper was gathering match balls to resume the game via goal kicks, while the ball assistant threw an additional ball onto the pitch. This happened despite the club seeing twice concerns about the multiball system raised around the game.

Prior to the match, match representatives and referees alike had increased the need to adhere to the guidance and implement the correct application. Match officials then raised concerns about this and raised concerns to the villa’s multiball supervisor at halftime.

In a statement, the Premier League said: “The Premier League has signed a sanctions agreement with Aston Villa FC after the club confirmed it had violated the Premier League multiball rules. The multiball system, first introduced in the 2022/23 season, is aimed at maintaining the flow of league matches, reducing delays and improving the fan experience.

“The club is necessary to adopt a multiball system in all league matches, and compliance with relevant rules and guidance is extremely important to maintain consistency. Importantly, we ensure that home clubs do not gain competitive advantage through misuse of the system.” The club will pay a fine of £125,000 and will be banned from operating the multiball system in the first three home league matches of the 2025/26 season. ”
