Newcastle United have sealed the signature of Aston Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey on a £43 million deal. Murphy, 24, leaves Villa Park and joins Magpies in a big money deal that will help villas meet profit and sustainability rules.

The current campaign is the third consecutive villa in European competition, with UEFA rules that only £60 million can record losses. That’s far less than the Premier League’s £105 million guidelines. They sold Ramsey to meet that number, but it gave them a percentage of revenue they spent on players’ wages. That number is 91% at the beginning of the summer and should fall below 70%.

When the two clubs met in the Premier League opening match on Saturday, both fans chanted against financial restrictions on Premier League and football, forcing Newcastle to sell young stars Elliot Anderson and Yangkaba Minte 12 months ago.

But now Eddie Howe’s men are more affordable and are making the most of the situation at the villa, guaranteeing Ramsey £39 million for the villa.

“I’m happy to be here,” Ramsey said. “It was crazy for a few days, but I’m really happy to be able to come here, I can’t wait to get started.

“This is a big move for me, but as soon as Gaffer was interested and I really knew me, it didn’t take long to decide.

“It was a tough game where I play in a villa that always plays against Newcastle – the team is full of energy, so athletic and the fans are very passionate, and I feel my game fits that.

Toon boss Eddie Howe declared: “Jacob is another great addition to our team. His qualities bring something different to the pitch and fits his profile of being young and hungry, but there is also a wealth of Premier League football under his belt.

“Jacob offers versatility and his directness to offensiveness has proven to be a real threat at this level in recent seasons.

“He also worked very well in the Champions League last season, and I believe he will be a great asset for us.”

Ramsey’s departure wasn’t the move that Villa boss Unai Emery wanted to happen, but it was decided that cashing in Ramsey was one of the best options, especially to bring more players before the end of the summer window.
