Liverpool’s defense showed signs of obvious weakness as it was beaten to a penalty by the Crystal Palace, Community Shield.
Milos Kerquez found Liverpool in the spotlight after surrendering the lead twice and losing to Crystal Palace on Community Shield. The Reds were beaten on a penalty at Wembley in the season opener after a 2-2 draw against the FA Cup winner.
There was a great performance from Florian Wirtz in the form of goals from Hugo Ekitike and Jeremie Frimpong’s new signature. However, Arne Slot’s defenses looked vulnerable, with Virgil Van Dijk giving Jean-Philippe Mateta a conversion penalty, and Ismaila Sarr taking advantage of a lot of space to beat Alisson.
Van Dick’s trip at Searle came after Allison saved a one-on-one from Mateta, who had escaped from defense. And the balance of the new look of the backline was questioned by Liverpool legend Jamie Carrager, who signed Kerquez with a £40 million left back and £34 million right back.
He states at halftime at X: “The LFC will continue to be great, but as I’ve seen every season, they’re defensively sensitive. Many goals recognized by the LFC have been actively and aggressive with the people and left space behind.

Former Liverpool winger Steve McManaman also pointed his finger at Kerkez. “It was Kerquez playing with everyone,” he said of the goal of the first palace at TNT Sports. “Everyone was moving forward, and the left back was stepping backwards.
“It gave the palace an opportunity, and the palace was exploiting it a lot of time. They had the balls in that area, especially in the second half.
Kerkez was signed by Bournemouth in the summer and started before Andy Robertson at left back. He made important blocks in the second half, but his offensive mentality frequently allows Daniel Munoz and Sarl to attack, and McManaman thinks there’s something to do in the slot.
“I don’t think that the two goals today have been taken away from Crystal Palace, but when we’re talking about Liverpool’s defensive issues, they were defensive mistakes,” he added.
“There’s something to tackle and being a new player in the new system, the better you get used to playing with each other. But they’re a bit vulnerable, which is why there’s a source of concern.”
Speaking after the loss, Slot admitted his concerns about his defense. “We have admitted that we opposed two goals (today) (preseason Athletic Bilbao),” he told TNT Sports. “We have admitted a few more to AC Milan, that is what we need to do better.
“Last season, it was about holding the cleanest sheets and attacks we could and creating some opportunities. Now we can create more.
“But we acknowledge more now. And if you want to compete to win the league, one of the main things is not to acknowledge opportunities, let alone the goal. I don’t acknowledge much today, I think it’s too much to win the game.”
