Andre Onana hoped to recover from a hamstring injury in time for Manchester United’s third final friend during a pre-season tour of the US, but he couldn’t make it

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana couldn’t guarantee he was suited to launch a new Premier League campaign after missing out on all pre-season fixtures. Onana, 29, suffered a hamstring injury during United’s first training last month.

Reuben Amorim was forced to alternate between Altai Bayindeal and Tom Heaton during his three-game tour of the US, which concluded Sunday. Miller Football recently reported that Onana had personally targeted a return for ultimate friendship with Everton, who traveled with Amorim’s 32-man team.

The Red Devils were not in their best form as they drew 2-2 with Everton tourist Everton in Atalanta, Georgia, but they were enough to win the Premier League summer series. However, when the real thing begins for United with Arsenal on Sunday, August 17th, Onana could still be on the sidelines despite feeling “great” ahead of the final preseason friendliness at Fiorentina’s home on Saturday.

“I feel good, I feel good,” Cameroon International told Sky Sports before Sunday’s clash. “It’s been a tough few weeks, but yeah, hopefully I’ll come back to the start of the season, and I enjoy training with my peers.

Onana added about United’s potential success in the 2025-26 season: “As long as you have a good start against Arsenal, everything is possible.”

Last week, Amorim claimed that Onana would have a better season amid speculation that the Red Devils boss wanted to bring in a new goalkeeper as a 29-year-old competition. However, Amorim’s observations from training have poured cold water into the exchange talk.

“I think you can see the goalkeeper even when you talk about Andre,” the United manager began. “Even Tom is a different goalkeeper. Altai has done really well. And Onana will be better this year like everyone else.”

Amorim’s comments were in line with United’s greater ratings ahead of his first full season at Old Trafford. “We think it’s better in every detail in our daily organisation,” explained the Portuguese.

“Nutrition is better, how we cook, what we eat, how we prepare for training. I think we are more organized. I think we have people now who will help us get better.

“So they help us and help us think more about watching the game, watching the team. So that’s a big help for me. When it’s a big help for the technical staff, it’s a big help for the players.”
