A man working on renovations at Camp Nou has died, and Barcelona has offered support to his grieving family.

The 54-year-old man, who has not been named, is believed to have died after suffering a “blow” at work on Friday, Catalonia regional police said. Emergency services were called to the stadium as the iconic stadium has been undergoing extensive construction for almost three years. His death prompted an investigation.

Work on the stadium will begin in June 2023, with Barcelona aiming to increase its capacity to 105,000, making it one of the largest stadiums in the world, and is expected to be completed in early 2028.

In response to the tragedy, the club issued a statement: “FC Barcelona deeply regrets the death of a worker who lost his life yesterday in a workplace accident during renovation work at the Spotify Camp Nou.The club would like to express its deepest condolences and send its heartfelt support to his family, friends and colleagues.”

“FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta would like to personally convey his condolences to the family and, on behalf of the entire club, wishes to make his own decision.”

Barcelona’s rivals Real Madrid have renovated the Bernabéu over the past decade, making it one of the most iconic and aesthetically impressive stadiums in the world. Barça are now responding by modernizing their stadium.

They returned to their iconic home in November for the first time in more than two years, defeating Athletic Bilbao with a reduced capacity of 45,401, with cranes and construction work still very much underway. The entire project is expected to cost around £1.1bn.

Since returning to Camp Nou, Barcelona have won every home game in La Liga. The only team to secure a result there was Atlético Madrid, who won 2-0 en route to defeating the Catalans in the last eight of the Champions League.

Barcelona won La Liga with a memorable victory, defeating Real 2-0 in the first El Clasico at the Camp Nou in May. Hansi Flick’s side are aiming for a hat-trick of Spanish titles as they prepare for a long-awaited full season return to home soil.
