After Spain defeated Argentina in the World Cup final, Donald Trump once again turned away from the trophy ceremony, with the US president deciding to hang out until the celebrations began.

The 80-year-old caused controversy last summer when Chelsea won the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States by standing still after handing over the gold medal, and was seen jumping up and down as Chelsea players celebrated their achievement.

After handing Spain captain Rodri the coveted Jules Rimet trophy, President Trump repeated the trick in New Jersey, but this time he didn’t stay for as long. He lingered for a moment on the edge of the platform as Spain celebrated, before being gently ushered out by a laughing Gianni Infantino.

Last month, it was confirmed that President Trump would once again award the trophy to the tournament winner.

FIFA president Infantino was the one who confirmed that Trump would carry the honors for Sunday’s final. “That was always the plan,” he said.

“It has always been done this way: the president of the country where the final is being held presents the trophy together with the FIFA president.”

Trump, who was booed by fans when he appeared on the big screen at MetLife Stadium, was at the World Cup final with Infantino.

Unfortunately, he and tens of thousands of other participants were forced into a rather boring final, which Spain’s Ferran Torres mercifully ended in overtime.

Barcelona scored in the 106th minute to give Spain a deserved breakthrough against 10-man Argentina, but Enzo Fernandes was sent off for a second yellow card just before the end of regulation.
