Iglesias is concerned about meeting the U.S. president, who is at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey and is scheduled to hand over the trophy to the winners of Argentina and Spain. However, he acknowledged that he intends to shake President Trump’s hand when speaking to a local magazine.
He said, “I don’t want to go to jail. I want to say hello at a time when we are all very happy and it will pass quickly and be forgotten. I don’t think now is the time to be controversial.”
“People know very well what I’m thinking. I want to do a lot of things, but the reality is that even though people think I’m all-powerful, I’m not very strong enough to work on certain things.” The 33-year-old has played just one minute for Spain at the World Cup, but has made headlines nonetheless.
Iglesias refused to play for his country during his time as president after Luis Rubiales forcibly kissed Royal Spanish Football Federation president Jenni Hermoso after Spain won the 2023 Women’s World Cup. Mr. Rubiales resigned shortly afterward and was later convicted of sexual assault.
The Celta Vigo striker has also spoken out against homophobia and in support of Black Lives Matter by painting his fingernails black. Iglesias scored 14 goals in La Liga in the 2025-26 season and is expected to play a supporting role to Mikel Oyarzabal in the final.
In the 2-0 semi-final win against France, Pedro Polo scored another goal in the second half, scoring his fifth goal of the tournament. With four games remaining, Argentina came from behind to beat England with two late goals after Anthony Gordon’s opening goal.
