With the pain of England’s heart-wrenching World Cup exit still fresh in their minds, it’s difficult to look beyond Euro 2028. Despite being six minutes away from reaching the final, the Three Lions succumbed to the pressure and Argentina scored two late goals to seal a famous victory. Thomas Tuchel made a number of defensive changes which ended in disastrous results and were widely criticized.
England ended up using a 5-4-1 formation with six defenders on the pitch as Argentina launched wave after wave of attacks. It was clear they were going to score and it was no surprise when Enzo Fernandes scored the equalizer with five minutes remaining. The goal failed to galvanize England and they were shocked when Lautaro Martínez scored the dramatic winner in stoppage time to take the game home.
He was quick to defend his tactical approach after the final whistle, even claiming that England’s footballing culture was a deciding factor in the result.
Tuchel has until Euro 2028 on his contract and has already insisted he will fulfill the remainder of his contract, which is reportedly worth around £5m a year.
However, many fans are not convinced and want him fired. But who should England sign in his place? Please share your thoughts in the survey below…
Josep Guardiola has already been hailed as England’s potential savior, but there is no guarantee he would be keen to manage the Three Lions.
He may not want to risk tarnishing his reputation by taking on a job where success will only be measured by winning the World Cup, especially since no team has ever been led by a foreign head coach.
Eddie Howe is arguably the outstanding English prospect, but his stock has fallen in recent months after overseeing Newcastle’s disappointing end to the Premier League season.
Lee Carsley, Mauricio Pochettino, Frank Lampard and Graham Potter are all to be mentioned, but are any of these managers better than England’s current manager?
