Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandes was a big problem for the England side on the night their World Cup dreams came to an abrupt end in Atlanta, Georgia.
After Enzo Fernandes eliminated England from the World Cup, he posted on social media a picture of himself and his Argentina team-mates laughing as Oasis’ Wonderwall played in the background.
The Chelsea midfielder broke English hearts with his stunning goal that sparked a late comeback against Atlanta, and Lautaro Martinez’s 92nd-minute winning goal denied England a place in the World Cup finals.
And Fernandes rubbed salt into the British wound with Wonderwall. Wonderwall has been sung by Three Lions players and supporters after previous tournament victories and has become the team’s unofficial anthem. The post was shared to Fernandes’ Instagram Story before being deleted, causing a fresh uproar on social media among England fans.
Fernandes had previously angered fans by celebrating an equalizer while midfielders covered their ears and imitated people talking. The Argentine team was also widely criticized for their antics during the tense match.
His recent antics on social media are unlikely to endear him any more to England fans. It is unlikely that English fans will give him a particularly warm welcome when he travels up and down the country with Chelsea next season.
The Londoner himself came under fire after he shared a post congratulating Fernandes on X’s official account shortly after Argentina’s victory.
They captioned the image, “Enzo Fernandes,” along with an explosion emoji. However, the post quickly went viral, sparking a furious backlash from fans, including supporters from their own country. The post has since been deleted.
England deservedly took the lead in the second half thanks to Anthony Gordon’s goal, but Argentina took control of the match after their opponents dropped deep early on in an attempt to maintain their advantage.
This allowed Lionel Messi to organize a new fierce counterattack with Thomas Tuchel, who drew a lot of criticism from fans and pundits for England’s weak capitulation in Atlanta.
Manager Lionel Scaloni admitted Argentina “smelled blood” when England withdrew, adding: “They doubted themselves a little bit.
“We smelled blood and went for it. We all felt it.”
