Andoni Iraola will be celebrating a big win in his early days at Liverpool, as Dominik Szoboszlai is set to commit his long-term future to the club. Szoboszlai is poised to end the uncertainty surrounding his position within the club. Szoboszlai has become one of the Reds’ most important players since joining from RB Leipzig in 2023.
After playing a key role in Liverpool’s Premier League title win in 2025, he emerged as a standout player in what followed to be a frustrating season for the club, earning him the Player of the Year award. There has been some uncertainty over his future at Anfield, with Real Madrid reportedly interested in signing him, but it now appears they are willing to put those concerns to rest.
According to reports from Hungary, the midfielder has reached an agreement following discussions with sporting director Richard Hughes and is expected to put pen to paper on a new contract today.
Athletic have also confirmed that terms have been agreed on a new long-term deal, with Liverpool securing Szoboszlai, who has two years left on his existing contract.
Negotiations have been ongoing over a new deal for Szoboszlai for some time, with the midfielder confirming he was in talks with the club earlier this year, but giving no indication at that stage that a new deal was close.
Szoboszlai told reporters after the Merseyside derby in April: “As I said[a few weeks ago]I can’t say anything new about the contract situation because there haven’t been any major developments.”
“I still have a lot of games left, so I’m focused on that. As you guys may know, my contract ends in 2028, so I’m ready to go every day, every week. And then we’ll see.”
“Of course I think I’m here for the long term, but as I’ve said many times, I love being here. I love the fans and I really love being here. My family is happy. I’m completely relaxed.”
Szoboszlai is one of the players who has returned to pre-season training in preparation for the new season as Liverpool’s new head coach Andoni Iraola makes his first appearance with his new team this summer.
New signing Jeremy Jaquet also joins the group, with the club announcing that he will wear the number five shirt at Anfield following the departure of Ibrahima Konate.
