Alexander Soros’ girlfriend Lena Selnes received hateful comments on an Instagram post after England’s World Cup quarter-final victory over Norway. Social media users even wished her and the Atletico Madrid striker death after he made his fifth and final appearance in this summer’s North American competition for the national team.
The former Crystal Palace player started all but one game. The 4-1 loss to France was the only exception when Staare Solbakken revamped his team.
Soros rotated with Fulham’s Oscar Bobb during the tournament. The change happened midway through the second half of Saturday’s game.
Therefore, the forward was not even on the pitch when England won the match in extra time. But that didn’t stop him and his family from being abused.
“The World Cup and soccer bring a lot of joy, but they also bring a lot of hate. I don’t really want to draw attention to it, but I feel like I need to pay attention to comments like this,” Selnes said in a post on his Instagram Story.
She shared a screenshot of an app notification that showed seven harassing comments about her or her partner. Multiple people urged him to commit suicide, and others told them both to commit suicide.
“Regardless of the situation, I hope everyone will think a little more before making such comments,” Selns concluded his post. She also added a handshake emoji and a red heart emoji.
Soros was involved in what many observers believe was the turning point in the match just before half-time. The team were still 1-0, but he and Erling Haaland went 2-1 with John Stones, with Declan Rice and Nico O’Reilly catching on.
But instead of passing to a teammate in a better position, Soros continued dribbling with the ball. England’s defense managed to corner him and eventually blocked his shot.
Soros then explained, “I took the touch and looked up and saw Stones blocking the pass. Then I took the touch again and it was too bad. I’m waiting for him to make the move instead of me making him make the move.”
He explained: “The only thing I want in that situation is to make a pass to Erling. At that moment, I felt like the pass wasn’t there, so I go and take the shot.”
