Ederson failed a medical at Manchester United last week, leaving his departure uncertain as the Red Devils move quickly to sign Youri Tielemans after agreeing a deal with Andrej Santos.
Manchester United remain open to signing Ederson despite preparing to bring in fellow midfielders Youri Tielemans and Andrej Santos. Aston Villa star Tielemans is due to undergo a medical at United on Tuesday after United activated his £35m release clause on the same day Santos announced his £50m move from Chelsea.
The deal came as a surprise, as Tielemans was barely mentioned among the many midfielders linked with United this summer. This is in contrast to Ederson, who the Red Devils have signed a £38.8m contract with Atalanta since early June.
The transfer is currently on hold after the Atalanta star failed a medical last week. However, according to a report in the Manchester Evening News, United are considering renegotiating Ederson’s contract in light of his knee injury, and Ederson could join for a lower fee.
Ederson twice played for Brazil at the World Cup and admitted on the occasion that his move to Old Trafford was “almost everything worked out”. The 27-year-old underwent some medical checks in the US last month after Brazil’s last-16 exit to Norway before flying to the UK for final checks.

Ederson was named by United manager Michael Carrick and director of football Jason Wilcox to replace Casemiro, who recently left Old Trafford when his contract expired. For Uruguay, Manuel Ugarte suffered a serious knee injury during the World Cup, leaving Coby Mainu as the only midfielder available for the first team.
Mainu was not part of the group that returned to pre-season training last week as he was away from the England game. Santos became Carrick’s first signing on Monday, with United’s summer business finally starting.

The Brazilian put pen to paper on a five-year contract with an option for a further 12 months. Former Leeds goalkeeper Karl Darlow also becomes a free agent this month and is expected to join the Red Devils.
Tielemans could score a hat-trick before United’s first pre-season friendly against Wrexham on Saturday. He had just suffered a heartbreak at the World Cup, injuring his hamstring during the pre-match warm-up in Belgium’s 2-1 loss to Spain.
