England came from behind to beat Norway and advance to the last four of the World Cup, but Jude Bellingham’s equalizing goal caused much controversy.

Andreas Schjelderup takes aim at referee after Norway’s World Cup sending off

Norway’s Andreas Schjelderup claimed that some of the refereeing decisions in their defeat to England were “a bit bitter”, leaving the underdog side to mourn their exit from the World Cup.

The Norwegians entered the quarter-finals as underdogs, but Schjerderup’s cross hit the post and took the lead, giving his country a shock advantage.

England successfully fought back with two goals from Jude Bellingham and grabbed the winner in extra time. The equalizer came late in the first half, but Norway claimed the ball hit one of the cables securing the cameras on the pitch, and although FIFA rules state play had to be stopped, the organization denies accusations of contact.

Erling Haaland was then pinned for a foul in the second half, meaning Torbjorn Heggem’s shot was canceled out for chalk, a decision that left a bitter aftertaste.

Coach Schelderup said, “Unfortunately, both the margin and the odds were against us.The referee’s decision was a little bitter. If we had lost completely, it would have been a little different.”

Playmaker Martin Odegaard, one of Norway’s most impressive players, said: “We didn’t have much help from the referee. The margins were against us and we had a little bit of bad luck.”

When asked about Bellingham’s tying goal and the developments leading up to it, he added: “I didn’t see it myself. The margins weren’t in our favor on some decisions today. Maybe that’s what you need in a game like this.”

Norway dominated Brazil to reach the last eight and manager Starre Solbakken admitted that while he rode his luck in that game, he did not enjoy that luxury against England.

“I feel sorry for them,” he said. “This is a top-level sport at best, but also the most terrifying. We were lucky against Brazil, but today we weren’t so lucky. Against Brazil we had a good margin, but today that wasn’t the case.”

“Sometimes you’re lucky. We were lucky against Brazil. Today we weren’t. The margin wasn’t in our favor, but that’s life.”
