Many have tried and failed to end England’s 60-year pursuit of major titles, but Thomas Tuchel could be the man to get the job done.
That’s what millions of fans back in Blighty are hoping for as the Three Lions prepare for a third successive World Cup quarter-final.
It would be ironic if the man who ended England’s trophy deadlock was from Germany, the same country England defeated and lifted the crown in 1966.
When asked to explain what ‘It’s Coming Home’ means, Tuchel passionately explained the deeper meaning of the national anthem. “Well, this is the homeland of football, it’s Wembley, it’s the cathedral of world football. So that’s why it has to be ‘home’.”
“But there are some steps in between. We must not get carried away, we must not look too far ahead and now we must stop looking back.”
“That’s what we agree with the team, we’re drawing a line in the sand. It’s not about Mexico anymore. It’s only about Norway. And it started today. We’ve had enough time to digest.
“Soccer and the World Cup itself are there to build countries, to make fans dream, to make them believe, to get them excited. This is the purpose. And we are on the best path to that, and we want to take the next step.”
