Manager Thomas Tuchel is furious at the decision to suspend Jarrell Quansah for two World Cup matches, according to reports. FIFA announced the sanction on Thursday and the England manager immediately asked the FA to express his anger at the FIFA disciplinary committee’s decision.
According to Sky Sports, Tuchel’s frustration centers on referee Alireza Fagan being shown a still photo of Quansar’s studs making contact with Jesus Gallardo’s shin. His argument is that if the officials had shown the video footage, they would have seen the defender take the ball away before contact occurred.
IFAB regulations do not automatically take into account considerations about endangering opponents, but it has been suggested that Tuchel believes it could have been shown to de-escalate the situation. The Three Lions also have no power to contest the verdict. FIFA officially announced the results in a statement on Thursday.
“The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has suspended England player Jarel Quansah for two matches for violating Article 14 of the FIFA Disciplinary Regulations after receiving a direct red card and being sent off during the 2026 FIFA World Cup match between Mexico and England at the Mexico City Stadium on 5 July 2026,” the statement read.
As a result, Quansah will miss England’s quarter-final match against Norway and a possible semi-final match against Switzerland or Argentina. Other reports said the FA had formally stated to FIFA that the VAR process had not been followed correctly. Express Sport has contacted the FA for comment.
Tuchel is also believed to be furious at FIFA’s decision to suspend Folarin Balogun for 12 months. While he insisted that his sending off was not justified, he expressed serious concerns about the process that led to the decision being overturned.
He said: “To be clear, it wasn’t a red card. VAR was involved. The decision was taken. Who is going to overturn that decision, when and on what basis? That’s strange to me. We’re looking for consistency.”I don’t think Declan Rice was a yellow card (against Mexico). Will France take back (Michael) Oliseh’s yellow card, which was not a yellow card? Where does this begin and end? ”
France have also ruled that their appeals to cancel the booking will not be heard, meaning the Bayern Munich star could be suspended from the semi-finals if he receives a further caution against Morocco. Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham, Nico O’Reilly and Harry Kane are all walking a disciplinary tightrope.
