Jordan Henderson was one of the first England players to appear on the pitch after the full-time whistle.
He has only played a few minutes in this tournament, but has been registered twice, but that hasn’t stopped him from making his mark at a fourth World Cup. He was said to have suffered a wrist injury, but there is now a possibility that he will kick his last ball in this tournament.
As England would do, they serenaded their fans, jumping over the billboards behind the goal to sing Oasis’ hit song ‘Wonderwall’.
However, once it was over, Henderson tried to jump over the advertising board, but seemed to lose his strength and fell to the floor. He hurt himself in the process and was clearly in severe pain as he lay dying on the floor.
A number of England’s players formed a gathering, which initially appeared to be part of the celebrations, but it was not clear what happened at the time.
Then it turned out that Henderson wasn’t doing well, and I actually happened to catch what happened in the aftermath of Wonderwall.
Dan Byrne was first on the scene to help his teammate and, thankfully, was able to receive medical aid immediately.
Henderson will remain in Mexico City with England’s medical staff until the team returns to Kansas City on Monday. Manager Thomas Tuchel said it was unclear at this stage whether surgery would be necessary.
The player said, “I injured my wrist and went to the hospital, but it’s a pretty serious injury. It’s not fit for this night. I don’t know if I’ll have surgery or not.”
Captain Harry Kane initially gave a positive update on Henderson, saying: “Jordan (Henderson) just fell down there. I think he’s OK. He just had something wrong with his arm.”
However, teammate Jude Bellingham added to the concerns by admitting: “He’s in a bit of trouble but our medical team is keeping him under control.”
