England’s celebrations after defeating Mexico 3-2 were abruptly cut short when Jordan Henderson suffered a serious injury after slipping while climbing on a billboard.
Jordan Henderson will miss England’s remaining World Cup matches after being diagnosed with an abnormal wrist injury that will require surgery. Henderson, 36, climbed over an advertising board and landed awkwardly during celebrations after England’s 3-2 win over Mexico in Mexico City.
The midfielder was seen lying on the grass in severe pain as teammate Dan Byrne rushed to help. England players erected a fence around Henderson and he was carried off the Estadio Azteca pitch on a stretcher and put on oxygen.
Speaking on the Make Football Great Again podcast, Mirror chief correspondent John Cross said: “To be honest, I feel it (his World Cup) could be over.
“It’s a wrist/arm injury that could probably be bandaged, but Jordan Henderson remains in Mexico City for treatment and repairs as the team returns to its home base in Kansas City.
It feels like his World Cup is probably over. It was a real blow, and it broke my heart. He is a very good character, person and leader. I think that would be really devastating for him. ”
The Athletic also reported that the Brentford star will need surgery to repair the injury and will be attended to by a member of England’s medical staff.
Henderson came on as a substitute against Mexico, but received a yellow card in the second half for challenging referee Alireza Faghani. His only appearance at the World Cup came late in England’s 2-0 win over Panama in the group stage, earning him his 90th cap.

Asked about Henderson’s injury after the match, England manager Thomas Tuchel said: “It’s unfortunate that Jordan has injured his wrist. It’s quite serious. He’s in hospital. He won’t be fit for the rest of the game tonight. I don’t know the protocol.”
Jude Bellingham, who scored twice against the hosts to help England reach the quarter-finals, added: “He’s in a bit of trouble, but our medical team is keeping everything under control. It’s not good to go into too much detail because we don’t really know what’s going on, but everyone was there to support him.”

Henderson, who missed out on Gareth Southgate’s squad for Euro 2024, has returned to England’s set-up under Tuchel, who emphasizes his on-field experience and off-field leadership qualities. The former Liverpool captain was called up to Germany’s first training camp by manager Tuchel in March last year.
“He embodies everything. He’s a back-to-back winner, that personality and character. He’s the glue of every team he’s ever played for, the glue that makes things special,” Tuchel told ITV. “I am convinced that if the teachers at the school are convinced about the quality of the class and the character of the class, it is better than the other way around.”
