Jurgen Klopp has agreed to become Germany’s new manager. Former Liverpool manager Klopp, 59, is set to take over from Julian Nagelsmann, who resigned after Germany’s shocking World Cup exit in the last 32.

Despite leading Group E with six points after three games, Die Mannschaft lost to Paraguay on penalties last Monday and were eliminated from the tournament. Nagelsmann is expected to remain in charge until after Euro 2028, and at a press conference after the game against Paraguay, he made it clear that he had no intention of resigning and said he was “able to play” in the next tournament.

However, after a meeting with the DFB, Nagelsmann made it clear that he had to fall for his sword or he would be sacked, and the former RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich manager resigned.

Klopp, who has been a pundit during the World Cup, has emerged as the front-runner for the role more than two years after leaving Liverpool as his last manager.

However, Fabrizio Romano said he has since agreed to return to the dugout and accepted to replace Nagelsmann as the next Germany national team manager on a long-term contract.

It added that Klopp’s departure from Red Bull, where he has worked as head of global football for the past 18 months, is still “under discussion” but that he will join the DFB.

Red Bull were considering Oliver Glasner to replace Klopp, but the Austrian has decided to sign on as Nottingham Forest’s new head coach, replacing Vitor Pereira.

Klopp decided to leave Liverpool six months ago and join Red Bull in early 2025. The German enjoyed eight and a half successful years at Anfield, winning the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup twice during his time as manager.

Klopp admitted in an interview earlier this week that it was “not the perfect timing” but said he was ready to “recharge” and take the job in Germany following Nagelsmann’s departure.

He told Magenta: “Yes, Julian has resigned and the DFB is working on a succession plan and has contacted me during the review process.

“The timing is still not perfect, as I am currently contracted to Red Bull, but it is still better than before. When I stopped at Liverpool, I lacked the energy to spend another year at the club, but now I am fully recharged.”
