Jordan Henderson was taken to hospital after manager Thomas Tuchel admitted the wrist injury sustained by the midfielder looked “really bad”. As his team celebrated their 3-2 victory over Mexico in the last 16 of the World Cup, Henderson collapsed against a billboard and was carried off the pitch at Mexico City Stadium on a stretcher. The former Liverpool captain required oxygen as he was carried away on a stretcher, but Three Lions boss Tuchel admitted in a worrying update to the BBC that the injury was “very serious” and may require surgery. He said: “Not good, not good. Next up is the right defender who got a red card. Jordan just fell down with a wrist injury. It looks really bad.”

Tuchel said at a press conference: “I injured my wrist and went to the hospital, but it’s a pretty serious injury. He won’t be fit for this night. I don’t know if he will undergo surgery or not.”

Captain Harry Kane initially gave a positive update on Henderson, saying: “Jordan (Henderson) just fell down there. I think he’s OK. He just had something wrong with his arm.”

However, teammate Jude Bellingham added to the concerns by admitting: “He’s in a bit of trouble but our medical team is keeping him under control.”

Bellingham also praised the character of his team, which overcame a huge scare to reach the quarter-finals and faced Norway. The Real Madrid star scored a fast-break double to put his side up 2-0, but Julian Quinones’ goal from close range gave Mexico hope heading into half-time.

Mexico’s confidence was further boosted when right-back Jarrell Quansah was sent off for a shocking challenge at the start of the second half, but Tuchel’s side quickly hit back with Kane’s penalty. Raul Jimenez increased England’s nerves by adding his own penalty, but Tuchel’s side managed to finish the game off.

And Bellingham said: “It’s really hard to put it all together. It was clinical how the 10 guys defended our box and how we were inside their box.”

“As a fan, in those moments when I felt so much pressure over the years that I watched as a kid, England probably would have collapsed, but we stayed united until the last moment.

“The players that played, the players that started, ran onto the field and gave their all. That’s what this team is about.

“The atmosphere was the best I’ve ever faced in international football. This is a great footballing country.

“The reception coming off the plane, although hostile, was beautiful to see how passionate a country can be about its team.

“The referee’s decision, that’s what it is. This is the World Cup and they’re human too. It’s easy to say now, but they’re human too. We did more than them, but we didn’t have to worry.”
