The signing of Sandro Tonali between Tottenham and Newcastle marks a club-record transfer for the north London club, who are enjoying a busy summer.

Tottenham Hotspur have reached an agreement to sign Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United in a deal that could reach £100m.

A deal has been struck in which Spurs will pay Tonali an initial £92.5m, with a further £7.5m on offer based on multiple Champions League qualifications. The Magpies had already rejected two bids from Tottenham for the Italian international after intensifying their pursuit of his signature late last month. There are no issues with Tonali’s personal terms with Spurs, with Tonali set to earn £275,000-a-week in north London.

After helping Spurs avoid relegation to the Premier League, Tonali is said to be a top target for manager Roberto De Zerbi as he looks to rebuild his team. Arsenal have also been linked with a move for the midfielder, who signed for Newcastle from AC Milan for £55m three years ago, but was looking for a new challenge. The midfielder is set to move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as Spurs continue their rebuild after reaching an agreement with West Ham for an £85m transfer for Matheus Fernandes. Fernandes will undergo a medical at Spurs’ Hotspur Way training ground today after Spurs won the race to sign the 21-year-old ahead of Tuesday night’s game against Manchester United. However, signing Tonali would exceed the previous club-record package worth £85m guaranteed which guaranteed Fernandes’ services.

It’s been a busy summer for Spurs so far, with Martin Dubravka, Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi joining on free transfers. Meanwhile, £52m was spent on Jan Paul van Hecke, who joined from Brighton & Hove Albion.

When asked about a potential deal last month, former Newcastle forward Alan Shearer believed there were two reasons why Tonali wanted to move to north London. He told Betfair: “Tottenham have just avoided relegation and I understand the appeal of London, but going to Spurs, who have had such poor results over the last two years, would be a surprising career move for Tonali in my eyes.”

“But I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s true that he has hinted he wants to leave Newcastle. Again, if he doesn’t want to be there, he’ll put the price he wants and if someone wants to pay it, it looks like it’s going to have to be three figures, then he’ll say thank you, get the extra £100m and move on.”

“I know Spurs have a new manager and that might be attractive to him, obviously London, but from a football club point of view look at how they finished the last two years.”

Tonali’s agent, Giuseppe Riso, was asked in March about a potential departure from Tyneside: “That was exactly the goal from the moment he went to England. To try to make him a star player. I think he is one of the most highly valued Italian footballers in the world.”

“This deal came about because a club with unlimited resources like Newcastle decided to invest in Sandro. We considered the idea of having him play at a higher level.”

Asked if Newcastle would sell Tonali this summer, chief executive David Hopkinson said three months ago:

“However, if a scenario like Isak’s occurs again, players under contract will leave on our terms and we will make the most of any opportunities that may be presented to the club.”
