Tottenham Hotspur have announced the signing of Matheus Fernandes from West Ham United on a permanent contract. The move means Spurs beat out Manchester United to sign the Portugal international, who had been heavily linked with a move from the London Stadium.

Fernandes becomes Tottenham’s fifth new signing this summer as Roberto De Zerbi continues to plan for the new Premier League season. Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, Martin Dubravka and Jan Paul van Hecke have all signed with Spurs.

Earlier this week, reports emerged that Spurs had agreed an £85m deal to sign Fernandes. In doing so, they moved ahead of Man United in the battle to sign the playmaker. Commenting on his move, Fernandes said: “I’m very excited about the next step. Spurs are a huge club and the head coach was a key factor in my decision to join. It was very special when we spoke.”

“We all look at football the same way: to be on the pitch as a strong team, with fight and energy and to win every game. I can’t wait for the games to start, I can’t wait to meet the fans and everyone and give everything for the club.”

Meanwhile, De Zerbi said: “I’ve admired Matthaus for a long time because he has the quality of the ball and the intensity and intelligence that are so important in the way we want to play.”

“Despite his age, he has already gained good experience in the Premier League and has shown quality and consistency at this level. Matthäus is comfortable under pressure, able to advance the ball, works hard for the team and has the courage to get things done in difficult moments. We believe this is the ideal environment for him to continue his development and we are excited to start working with him.”

Fernandes made 38 appearances for West Ham last season, scoring four goals. However, they were relegated from the Premier League. The 21-year-old spent just one season with the Hammers after joining from Southampton for £40m 12 months ago and has now completed his move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Tottenham are preparing for the new season and it won’t be long before they are back in pre-season action. De Zerbi and his team will travel to Australia and New Zealand, where they will play friendlies against Sydney FC, Auckland FC and Chelsea.

This will strengthen the squad ahead of the Premier League opener against Brentford on August 22nd. The Spurs head to G-Tech Community Stadium looking to secure all three points. It remains to be seen which other players Tottenham might sign before the summer transfer window closes, but a number of names have already been linked with a move to north London.

Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali and Manchester City forward Savinho have both been named as potential targets for Tottenham in the summer transfer window.
