The German Football Association (DFB) has announced that it will hold talks with coach Jurgen Klopp after coach Julian Nagelsmann resigned following the team’s disastrous World Cup defeat. Nagelsmann’s tenure as coach ended just four days after Monday’s penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay, which prevented Germany from progressing to the last 16.
The former Bayern Munich manager has decided to resign despite still having a contract until Euro 2028. In a statement, the DFB confirmed Nagelsmann’s departure and revealed that 59-year-old Klopp is interested in replacing him. “The DFB leadership will now seek to hold discussions with manager Jurgen Klopp regarding the appointment of a new manager.” “He has already shown a general willingness to accept the position.”
The former Liverpool manager has not been in charge since leaving Anfield in May 2024. Since then, he has served as Red Bull’s global head of soccer, while also working as a television pundit.
Klopp was broadcasting the World Cup on German broadcaster Magenta during the tournament during Die Mannschaft’s disastrous defeat. After the defeat, the Mirror reported that many German football icons called for Nagelsmann’s resignation.
Their wish has now been fulfilled. “In the days following the defeat, I thought a lot and consulted with people I trust personally and within the federation,” Nagelsmann explained.
“This decision was never easy for me. My first priority has always been the success of my team. After such a terrible disappointment, they deserve a chance for a fresh start.”
“I would like to thank the coaching staff, the support team and the federation for supporting us, especially the players I have had the privilege of working with.
“A special thank you also to our fans. Even in difficult times, you supported us, believed in us and gave us energy. We are truly sorry that we let you down and could not provide you with a more memorable night of football at this World Cup. You deserve so much more!”
DFB sporting director Rudi Voller added: “After everyone’s disappointing World Cup exit, Julian’s decision deserves our respect. He wants to continue shaping things responsibly and puts the entire national team above himself.”
“Of course, we all would have wished for a different result of the tournament and a more convincing performance of the team. However, Julian is and will continue to be an excellent coach and I am confident that he will continue on the path of success. I sincerely thank Julian for his trust and friendly cooperation.”
